As A Pisces, water flows through her veins, it is both her spirit and constant guide, but over time she has come to understand that water is so much more than her outdoor swimming challenges and refuge.  It is a vast and complex force, both life giving and destructive, and it demands a deeper reckoning.

In this particular series of work, she combines water with her fascination for Archeology, the hidden gems of the past; not the glitzy, glossy artefacts, but the more mundane workaday objects, like pottery.

​

She explores the containers which over eons of time have evolved to hold, carry and store this precious liquid.  Treasured and often highly decorated, they can also be used as a source of information about cultures and lives in the distant past, surviving the eroding of ages.

​

Here she also draws upon memories made during her scuba diving trips, including to wrecks beneath the sea, the colours found of the reefs and the possibility of discovering remains of the past.  Besides pottery, ancient peoples made clay Goddesses which are often found as protective amulets, she wonders how many of these litter the seabeds, to tell their own stories.

​

Alongside the 2D images, she has also been exploring the creation of 3D vessels from linen, Kona cotton, acrylics and collage, of which civilisations from the very earliest of times have made their own versions in wood, clay or stone.

​

Her material process, is informed by a lifelong engagement with textile practices.  Raised in an environment of colour, fabric, stitch and pattern cutting; making was instinctive and embodied.  Although she initially turned away from this inheritance, she now re-engages with it through printing, painting, tearing and cutting paper.  These actions reference textile traditions whilst combining with painterly genres to create unique pieces of work.

Through layered surfaces and forms, her work considers lightly how we, as art loving human beings have created beauty from the most utilitarian items through millennia and still use them as vessels, amulets and ornaments.
